Wood SLICING

Hi everybody!
As we have wrote in the first article of this year (you can find it here), we wanted to improve our international side, also by making available articles in English, for all our foreign online visitors.. So, here we go!
First of all, I'm going to translate the articles speaking about techniques.

Wood SLICER machine, is a device that, from an entire log, obtains sheets of wood, from 0.3 to 3 millimeters thick. If you think about that, it's a very precise and delicate processing, as the sheet can be thinner than your skin! (take a look at this scale of the universe, just to be aware of the dimension we are talking about). The name of this machine come from the fact that the piece of wood is literally sliced by a putting it on a lathe, with a fixed or moving blade. This sheet will be used, then, for the veneering process, that creates furniture at a lowest cost, but not always at a lowest quality, as we'll see soon.

Now we are going to describe some cuts and their result.

1) lengthwise cut (also said italian): the log is cut in the middle and the slicing is made parallel to the plane face. The result is a variegated figure, called flame or cathedral (you can easily see why!)

2) quarter slicing (or french slicing): in this case, the log is cut in 4 pieces and every piece is sliced parallel to the annual growth rings of the three (probably the image will explain much better then the worlds). The resultant sheet will have a straight grain appearance.

3) rotary cut: this is one of the two cases of slicing with a fixed blade. In the examples we have just spoken about, the wood was fixed, while here it rotates and comes nearer to the blade. if you can imagine it, it's like a spiral slicing. This kind of slicing is used for poor wood, that can be used afterwords for plywood and multi-ply.

4) half-round slicing: here is the second type of slicing with a fixed blade. As the rotary cut, the log rotates on itself, but it is not sliced all along its circumference, but on an arc parallel to the center of the log. 

This type of slicing is made on very precious essences and on small logs: in this way the wood don't get damaged and there are very few residuals.

Every type of cut gives the wood a very particular appearance; the sheets can the be combined as you like and create million of different patterns.

In queste settimane c'è stato molto da fare in CN Arredamento Design... E nel "molto da fare" è compresa anche la partecipazione ad una delle fiere internazionali più importanti: IMM Cologne. 

Questi i numeri della fiera: in sette giorni, dal 14 al 20 Gennaio scorsi, più di 142.000 visitatori, provenienti da 137 paesi hanno visitato le 11 halls in cui era divisa la fiera, in cui hanno esposto ben 1250 aziende, provenienti da 50 paesi diversi. Rispetto all'anno prima i visitatori provenienti da fuori Germania sono cresciuti del 13% e rappresentano ben il 42% del totale.

CN ha partecipato, o forse è meglio dire ha visitato, questa fiera in tre giorni, nell'ottica di una internazionalizzazione sempre maggiore. Abbiamo conosciuto persone provenienti da tutto il mondo, con idee diverse, stili particolari e design unici. 

Imm Cologne si propone di presentare i trend internazionali e le nuove innovazioni del mercato; compito che svolge in modo egregio, presentando anche numerose sezioni dedicate ai giovani. Questo mix di grandi aziende europee e mondiali e di giovani talenti, dona un gusto particolare alla visita. Inoltre i settori toccati sono numerosi: cucine, camere, bagni e living di ogni genere e sorta, arredati secondo i gusti più disparati e le tendenze più diverse. Una grande parte va ovviamente alle aziende italiane: esse si sono mostrate all'avanguardia nel gusto e negli allestimenti, nella particolarità delle lavorazioni e nell'originalità delle forme.

Per quanto riguarda i giovani designer, diverse sono state le sezioni a loro dedicate: numerosi hanno esposto con le scuole, il contest D3 ha premiato i giovani designer e quelli indipendenti, il progetto Ü60 ha dato l'occasione agli studenti di creare nuovi prodotti per una fascia di popolazione anziana, sempre in maggiore crescita.
E' stato in questi ambienti che CN ha conosciuto Jenny Ekdahl, Raphael Biller e Martin Fialkowske, le cui innovazioni, particolarmente apprezzate, saranno oggetto di un articolo che uscirà a breve!

In these weeks, we had so much to do here at CN Arredamento Design... And in that "so much to do" there is also the participation at one of the most international furniture fair: Imm Cologne.

These are the numbers of the fair: seven days, between 14 and 20 January, more than 142.000 visitors, from 137 different countries, that have visited 11 halls, where 1250 companies, from around 50 countries had their stands. Foreign visitors raised 13% and represent 42% of the total.

CN has participated, or better has visited, this fair, aiming to a better international approach to the market. We knew a lot of people, coming from all over the world, with different ideas, particular style and unique design.

Imm Cologne want to present international trends and marketable innovations; a well done work, we must say. As matter of the fact, there are numerous opportunities for the young designer to present their work. A great mix of big names of the furniture world and young talents give the visitors a complete overview of the sector. Which is comprehensive of all kind of furniture: kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, living in general... And all of them are furnished in very different ways.
We must recognize that Italian industries have always a great part in showing their taste for innovations and dressings, being, as always, original and paying attention to details.


Regarding young designers, there were different sections for them: some schools, D3 contest rewarded young and independent designer,Ü60 shown off the creativity of a group of students in creating object and design for aged people.
In these halls, CN met Jenny Ekdahl, Raphael Biller and Martin Fialkowske, whose innovative products have been very appreciated by us, and they will be soon on our blog!

Una bella (e comoda) notizia per tutti...

Dopo qualche mese di attesa Google maps, il più utilizzato sistema di localizzazione mondiale, ha censito la nostra azienda e ha segnalato la posizione dell'azienda con un'utilissima stellina!

Arrivare da noi sarà ancora più semplice!

Un buon 2013

Buongiorno a tutti e bentrovati! Il Blog di CN Arredamento Design riapre le sue porte dopo le meritate vacanze (sempre troppo corte) ma il fatto che fin le visualizzazioni siano state più di 2000, in pochi mesi di attività, ci dà la giusta carica per questo nuovo anno!

Che programmi avete per il 2013? In questo mese si sta cercando, qui in CN, di trovare il giusto calibro per i mesi che verranno, guardadoci intorno e indietro, perché, come ricorda il vecchio Rafiki e il più giovane Max Pezzali "RICORDATI CHI SEI"!

Per quanto riguarda questa rubrica, le idee e i buoni propositi abbondano. Ci siamo promessi infatti di:
- creare una rubrica GGD: giovani/grandi designer;
- continuare gli articoli tecnici che riguardano le lavorazioni del legno;
- crescere sui social network;
- tradurre gli articoli in inglese (so che alcuni di voi lettori ne saranno lieti... don't you?);
- approfondire le analisi gestionali;
- cercare di definire le altre idee che frullano nell'aria dei nostri uffici.
I buoni propositi sono molto più numerosi: essere simpatici, accattivanti, moderni, attenti allo Zeitgeist (per chi non lo conoscesse, eccolo qui), europei, mondiali (ma prima di tutto italiani!), roundhead e un po' cavalier ...
E voi invece? Nuovi progetti per l'anno nuovo o vecchi progetti ancora da concludere?
